Third-Degree Atrioventricular Block. Third-degree (complete) AV block is characterized by total failure of conduction of atrial impulses to the ventricle. It can be congenital or acquired. There is complete AV dissociation, with more atrial than ventricular contractions, and the ventricular rate is usually slow and regular (Fig. 16.25).

bundle branch block, complete heart block characterized by absence of conduction in a bundle branch or conduction delay, causing ventricular activation to occur largely or exclusively through the contralateral bundle. The more distal (from the atrioventricular node) the block, the greater the risk of development of complete heart block (third-degree AV block). This is beacuse automaticity diminishes gradually with the distance from the AV node. It is often difficult to localize the level of the block on the 12-lead ECG. Third degree atrioventricular block — or vomplete AV block — is noted for the complete interruption of the AV conduction. No atrium-generated stimuli is conducted to the ventricle, which means that both atria and ventricles contract at their own pace. Atrioventricular block (AV block) is characterized by an interrupted or delayed conduction between the atria and the ventricles.

In third-degree (complete) atrioventricular block, there is a total interruption of AV conduction, causing an electrical disconnection between the atria and the ventricles. Atrioventricular (AV) block is a cardiac electrical disorder defined as impaired (delayed or absent) conduction from the atria to the ventricles. The severity of the conduction abnormality is described in degrees: first-degree; second-degree, type I (Wenckebach or Mobitz I) or type II (Mobitz II); and third-degree (complete) AV block. Complete atrioventricular block caused by hyperkalemia should be treated to lower serum potassium levels and patients with hypothyroidism should also receive thyroid hormone. [ citation needed ] If there is no reversible cause, the clear treatment of complete atrioventricular block is mostly permanent pacemaker placement. Atrioventricular (AV) block is partial or complete interruption of impulse transmission from the atria to the ventricles. The most common cause is idiopathic fibrosis and sclerosis of the conduction system. Diagnosis is by electrocardiography; symptoms and treatment depend on degree of block, but treatment, when necessary, usually involves pacing.
